The Kentucky Center Governor’s School for the Arts (GSA) is a unique program for creative high school students. Each year, GSA brings together a community of professional artists and over 200 high school rising juniors and seniors from across Kentucky to Lexington’s Transylvania University for three weeks of intensive college-level training in nine disciplines: creative writing, dance, drama, instrumental and vocal music, musical theatre, visual art, new media and architecture. GSA teaches self-discipline, reinforces self-esteem, and fosters a supportive artist community that is diverse in its geography and ethnicity.
Job Posting: Counselor
GSA is seeking a candidate for the position of Counselor for the 2010 summer program. The Counselor acts as a primary support for students, faculty and staff, providing guidance for specific problems or confidential brief counseling for individuals. The successful candidate must live in residence from June 20th to July 10th, and be available for training sessions with staff the week of June 14th.
Position requirements:
Master’s Degree in Psychology, Counseling or Social Work (or related field)
Experience in counseling and mentoring youth
Experience in crisis intervention or brief counseling
Desired experience and qualities include:
Knowledge or experience with programs for gifted and talented students
Background and/or appreciation of the arts
Superior interpersonal and verbal communication skills
Understanding of adolescent development
Knowledge of common psychological disorders and appropriate treatments
