Day one began bright and early for the students with a performance by artist-in-residence, jazz pianist, and speaker, Harry Pickens. He kicked off the first day of the program with an inspirational performance of piano improvisation with a rendition of “What a Wonderful World” and encouraged the students to be present and determined over the next three weeks.
After the morning performance, the students dispersed to their respective studios and began to focus on their art forms. The previously quiet performance halls and classrooms came alive as the students shared with each other just why they were chosen to be here by performing their audition pieces in studio and by sharing other pieces of artwork they had brought with them.
Today at lunch, we asked a few students, “What did you like most about Harry Pickens’ performance this morning?”
