Recommendation Process

Please carefully review the follow instructions for the GSA 2012 Recommendation process. You must obtain two recommendations to be considered for the 2012 Governor’s School for the Arts!

Steps to obtaining two (2) recommendations:

  1. Download and print the “Student Recommendation Teacher Copy”, “Student Recommendation Administrator Copy” and the “Memo to Administrators” at the bottom of this page, after reading through these steps.
  2. Fill in your name and audition information on the top portion of both recommendation forms. (This is required for your recommendations to be considered complete. If you are applying for two disciplines, be sure to review step 8 once you’ve read steps 1-7).
  3. After you have completed the top portion of the recommendation forms, deliver the recommendation forms and “Memo to Administrators” to a guidance counselor at your school. If you would like a private teacher to fill out the “Student Recommendation Teacher Copy,” you are responsible for giving that to your private teacher. If you are homeschooled, please skip to step 7.
  4. Explain to your counselor that in order to be considered for the Governor’s School for the Arts you must obtain one recommendation from a member of the school’s administrative staff and one from a teacher who has had you in class or a private teacher whom you have selected.
  5. Explain to the counselor that you will not be able to see the confidential recommendation forms once they are completed and that he/she is responsible for disseminating the information, collecting the completed forms from the teacher and member of the administrative staff, and returning the information postmarked by February 15th.
  6. Tell the counselor which teacher in your school you would prefer to complete the recommendation form titled “Student Recommendation Teacher Copy.” If you are having a private teacher fill out the form, have he/she return the recommendation to GSA directly. If you are applying for two disciplines, be sure to review step 8.
  7. If you are homeschooled, the recommendation forms may be filled out by someone who is familiar with your character, talent, and abilities (i.e. a mentor from the community, a place of worship, sports, etc.). Additionally, you do not need to download the “Memo to Administrators” document. Parents may not complete recommendation forms.
  8. If you are applying in two disciplines you will need two different teacher recommendations and two copies of the same administrator forms:

-ADMINISTRATOR RECOMMENDATIONS: Your administrator can submit the same recommendation for both art forms, as long as he/she provides two copies of the recommendation to GSA. He/she must indicate each discipline on each form. For example, if you are applying in Visual Art and Instrumental Music, your administrator can make a copy of his/her complete recommendation form, as long as one form is labeled “Visual Art,” and the other form is labeled “Instrumental Music.”

-TEACHER RECOMMENDATIONS: The same teacher does not have to complete your two teacher recommendation forms. For example, if you applied in Visual Art and Instrumental Music, your Visual Art teacher can fill out the recommendation form for your Visual Art portfolio review and your Band Director (or private instructor) can fill out the recommendation form for the Instrumental Music audition. Make sure you or your teacher indicates on the top of the recommendation form to which discipline the form corresponds.

Your recommendation forms (available at the links below) must be postmarked no later than February 15th in order for you to be considered for the 2012 Governor’s School for the Arts. All recommendations must be mailed to:
