Even as the first few GSA students appeared on campus with boxes of belongings, you could already feel a static energy in the air. With help from parents, friends, and anyone else readily available, the class of 2006 checked out their new living space for the next three weeks, some wondering for the first time how they would ever be able to fit all their "stuff" into one dorm room.

With the heavy lifting over, everyone enjoyed a Father's Day brunch before proceeding to the Orientation and Welcome Ceremony. Students and parents were reminded of the amazing experience they were about to embark upon from both staff and dignitaries, including Kentucky Center President Stephen Klein, Executive Director of the Office of Arts and Cultural Heritage Lindy Casebier, and Commerce Secretary George Ward.

Following the ceremony and a brief introduction to each discipline's working space, it was time for the parents to say good-bye (or at least "see you in three weeks"). There were tears, laughs, and a lot of "I love you's," but regardless, the student class turned to face the Governor's School for the Arts on their own with excitement, anticipation, and perhaps just a little nervousness. As the evening continued, everyone met in their R.A. groups for the first time, giving them an opportunity to start forming the GSA friendships they've heard so much about.

After dinner (and the first few speculations of what normal food was going to be like for the next few weeks), the entire school smiled for the camera on the steps of Old Morrison for Photo Night, barely making it inside before a torrential downpour. Despite the nasty turn in weather, however, students gathered in Forrer Hall during the last few hours of the day, wondering together what kind of artistic challenges and personal endeavours lie ahead.
